Website migration/CivicPlus

Ready for more flexibility than CivicPlus?

A Custom Alternative to CivicPlus

Move from CivicPlus to a custom website built around your organization.

CivicPlus works well for many government organizations. But as your needs change, you may find that your website feels more expensive, more restrictive or harder to customize than it needs to be.

Meaningful Marketing House helps municipalities and mission-driven organizations move from CivicPlus to modern, custom websites that are easier to manage and built around the way your team actually works.

Thinking about leaving CivicPlus? Let’s talk about what comes next.

Talk About Your Website

Why organizations move from CivicPlus

More room to grow.

Many municipalities eventually need more flexibility, more ownership and more customization than a single proprietary platform is built to offer.

01

More control over your website

Your website does not need to be limited by the templates, modules and workflows available inside a single proprietary platform.

We build custom websites around your content, services, users and internal processes.

02

A more modern resident experience

Government websites contain a lot of information. Good design helps residents find the right department, form, service, meeting or answer without digging through layers of navigation.

We design around the visitor journey first.

03

Easier everyday updates

Your communications team should be able to handle routine website updates without opening support tickets or relying on a developer for every small change.

We create administrative tools around the updates your team actually makes.

04

Clearer long-term costs

Platform subscriptions and add-on modules can grow year after year. A custom site lets you choose your own hosting and support, and see exactly what you are paying for.

We help you compare the real costs before you decide.

What a custom website provides instead

Not another rigid website builder.

We do not move you into another rigid website builder. We build a custom website using modern web technology, with the infrastructure, content management tools and integrations selected around your organization’s needs.

Depending on the project, that may include secure cloud hosting, a managed database, staff logins and purpose-built administrative tools for departments, notices and documents.

Most importantly, we can structure the project so your organization owns its website, source code, domain and core accounts.

  • Department and staff directories
  • Interactive maps
  • Resident portals
  • Searchable document libraries
  • Agendas, minutes and public notices
  • Events calendars
  • Online payments
  • Permit and request workflows
  • Custom databases
  • Dashboards
  • API integrations
  • AI-powered website search and Q&A

Is moving right for you?

An honest fit check.

CivicPlus may still be a good fit if:

  • Your team relies on CivicPlus modules and is happy with how they work
  • You prefer one vendor handling hosting, software and support
  • A predictable subscription fits your budget process best

It may be time to move if:

  • Residents struggle to find services, forms or meeting information
  • You need features the available modules do not offer
  • You want to own your code, content and data outright
  • Routine updates depend on vendor support

We are happy to tell you if staying put makes more sense.

What the CivicPlus migration covers

Nothing important gets left behind.

Your existing website stays live while your new one is built. Here is what we take care of along the way.

Content and document migration

Municipal websites carry years of agendas, minutes, ordinances, PDFs and forms. We inventory every document, keep what residents still need, archive what they don’t and organize the rest so it is easy to search.

URL redirects and SEO protection

We map existing CivicPlus page and document addresses to their new homes, so links in old emails, council packets and search results keep working.

Forms and integrations

Request forms, notification sign-ups, payment links and connections to the other systems your departments use are rebuilt or reconnected, then tested end to end.

Accessibility

Public-sector websites have to work for every resident. We design, build and test to WCAG 2.2 AA standards, including the documents we migrate.

Security and reliability

Secure managed hosting, role-based administrative access, backups and recovery planning, uptime monitoring, a privacy and security review, and analytics and search monitoring, planned from the beginning rather than added on launch day.

Training

Department editors learn the updates they make most often, with written guides for the rest, before the new site goes live.

Launch support

We coordinate the domain and DNS changeover, monitor the new site closely and stay available after launch.

Ownership

Where it fits the project, your organization owns the domain, hosting accounts, source code and content.

How it works

Moving from CivicPlus, step by step.

See how this fits our overall approach on our website migration page.

01

Audit your existing CivicPlus website

We review your pages, documents, forms, integrations, navigation, analytics and current functionality.

02

Decide what should move

A migration is a good opportunity to clean house. We identify what should be migrated, rewritten, consolidated, redirected or archived.

03

Design and build the new website

We create a site around your organization rather than recreating CivicPlus somewhere else.

04

Migrate your content and functionality

We move the content and tools your visitors rely on while improving organization and usability.

05

Protect your search visibility

We map existing URLs, implement redirects and make sure search engines can understand the new site.

06

Train your team

Before launch, your staff learns how to manage the website and the workflows they will use most often.

07

Launch and support

We coordinate the domain and DNS transition, monitor the new site and remain available after launch.

You do not have to rebuild everything exactly as it is.

One of the biggest opportunities in moving away from CivicPlus is deciding what your website could do better.

Instead of simply transferring hundreds or thousands of pages into another system, we can simplify navigation, improve search, consolidate outdated content and create tools specifically for your residents and staff.

Side by side

CivicPlus vs. a custom website

Both approaches serve a purpose. The right choice depends on how much flexibility, ownership and customization your organization needs.

CivicPlus

  • Government-specific proprietary platform
  • Standardized modules and workflows
  • Managed within the CivicPlus ecosystem
  • Customization within available platform capabilities
  • Ongoing vendor relationship and platform fees

Custom website

  • Designed specifically for your organization
  • Custom functionality and integrations
  • Flexible administrative tools
  • Greater design and development freedom
  • Potential for client-owned code and infrastructure
  • Technology that can evolve with your organization

The client needed
The Alliance took on the national Baldrige Award process on top of supporting its network of state and regional programs, which meant new audiences, new services and a much more complicated story, all on a rigid WordPress site.
We did
We simplified the information architecture and rebuilt the site as a custom web application with an interactive member map, a program finder, a self-service member portal, an AI site assistant grounded in Alliance content and an admin portal with permission levels for staff.
The result
News, events, member records and media were migrated, every legacy URL was mapped to protect SEO, and the site soft-launched ahead of the annual conference.
